Visiting the Netherlands

Being more Dutch than anything else, I naturally want to catalog Dutch things like drinking songs, other music, places to visit, phrases, and a few things to see.

Most the times I have travelled to the Netherlands, it was flying from Vancouver to Amsterdam via KLM. If you can fly KLM, that's the way to go as you get just a touch of Dutchness before you even set foot in the country.

I would say you need to go one a minimum of one each of:

  • Art museum: preferably old art/bigger museum but the Escher museum is pretty cool too./
  • WWII thing: Anne Frank or Corrie ten Boom museums are great (the former I haven't actually been to but the latter I have and is less touristy).
  • Old church: it's some solid local history and architecture even if you don't care about the religious bit.
  • Castle: depending where you end up that might be a bit harder.

Try consuming:

  • Fries with satay peanut sauce and mayo, called "patat orloog" which means "frenchfry war".
  • Frikandel speciaal (hot dog-esque sausage with a Dutch dipping sauce and chopped onion, no bun).
  • Haring (herring).
