It being "the holiday season", here's a podcast episode with some backstory on a common feature of our Western culture's festivities: the elf.
A few month's ago, I was looking through the suggested podcasts and episodes given by the Overcast podcast client, and it suggested a new show called Lore, saying, "Lore is a podcast about the frightening history behind common folklore". I thought it sounded interesting, so I gave it a try, and was hooked.
The first episode I listened to was Episode 5: Under Construction, and it covered several stories of where the idea of the elf comes from. Now that it's Christmastime, I thought I'd listen again. Boy, are elves creepy or what? (Maybe this is the origin of the modern "elf on a shelf" thing, too.)
Now that I'm all caught up with Lore, I've added it to my list of podcasts that I regularly listen to.
