Fiction
Canticle for Leibowitz
- Post apoc. set in a monastery.
- Part one starts in a "new dark age" then jumps 600 year forward, then jumps another 600 years.
Eifelheim
- Alt. history set in the 1300s or something like that.
- Alien encounter.
- Discusses if Christian concept of salvation is for ET too.
Lager Queen of Minnesota
- Two concurrent storylines a generation apart.
- About a breakout brewer and her estranged craft beer niece.
The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress
- Near-future moon colonisation.
- Wrote more about it here
Princess Bride
- If you think the film is decent-or-better, the book is fantastic.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
- Comedy sci-fi.
- Whole series is great.
Not recommendations from me but here's a list of post-apocalyptic but pre-dystopian pieces, mostly books.
Non-fiction
The Boy Who Could Change the World: The Writings of Aaron Swartz
- A collection of essays written before his suicide.
Debt: The First 5,000 Years
- Way more exciting than it sounds.
- Key point, I guess, is how fiat currency isn’t for holding wealth, but for tracking debt.
